We, The People

For three dancers and thirty participants

Joanne Leighton proposes a new participatory creation for 3 choreographic artists and 30 residents, based on the common gestures characteristic of gatherings around the world.
The show premiered on May 22, 2022 with Espace 1789 in Saint-Ouen as part of the Cultural Olympiad of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Joanne Leighton has been exploring universal gestures for years, those movements we all share, no matter what society we live in, no matter what culture we grow up with.
Based on the photographic atlas (made up of some 1,000 images, collected by the choreographer over the last 10 years), which was the starting point for the stage creation People United for 9 performers, Joanne Leighton this time takes a group of around 30 participants on an in-depth exploration of shared, committed gestures, particularly during the major gatherings that have marked recent years.

40 hours of creative work with local residents and the artistic team took place prior to the performance.
