A piece for 3 dancers and 58 choreographers created on the principle of the exquisite corpse.
Displacing the figure of the author, questioning the act of transmission, Corps Exquis (2019), updates the original creation of the Exquisite Corpse that choreographer Joanne Leighton launched to 57 of her peers in 2012, with Exquisite Corpse. Now, in a new configuration of a three-body solo, the choreographer traces the furrows of a material steeped in influences, breaks and continuities. Seizing the strength of the solo, three dancers delve into the teeming landscape triggered by danced gestures, and together reactivate the choreographic game that questions the passage from one body to another.
58 choreographers contributed to this project, each with the creation of a 60-second module, developed from the last ten seconds of the previous choreographer’s sequence, thus constituting a form of movement chain. This 58-minute sequence of solos became the score danced by the 3 dancers. Each choreographer chose how to transmit the choreographic material of his minute to Joanne Leighton, along with the instructions for use. The cadavre exquis is made up of 3 sequences (01-02-03).
Corps Exquis can be accompanied by Traces Exquises. This installation presents the documents sent by the choreographers. They are both the instructions and the proposal, as well as the working documents for the choreographic project. To complete the installation, an original selection of traces makes up the Parcours Exquis. As a preview to the show that the public will discover, it offers the chance to explore a minute of the creation in greater depth, with the company’s dancers, as they wander through the spaces of the theater.
What’s delightful about this show is that it’s all about dance, nothing but dance, in a wide variety of choreographic styles and proposals.
