The Capdenac Vigil

From May 06, 2022 to April 04, 2023
In partnership with Derrière Le Hublot, Scène Conventionnée Art et Territoire in Capdenac-Gare, France.

The twelfth edition of The Vigil began in early June in Capdenac, a village located between Aveyron and Lot. In collaboration with Derrière le Hublot – Scène Conventionnée Art et Territoire, the residents of the region kept watch over Capdenac-Gare from Capdenac-Le-Haut for an entire year ! This is the first time the performance has been staged in a rural setting.

Early morning awakening, no alarm needed. A call to vigilance. Start by stretching, then get up, wash, dress, lace up my sneakers… Understanding the ritual, stepping into the routine of the Watcher. Connecting with other early risers, with the *Veilleurs* community, and wondering what this moment means for each of us—because this morning, I have a meeting with… I know it, I received the text message. Michèle is waiting for me. Checking the time. Leaving the house. (…) Then climbing up. Being surprised by the fog and finally reaching the meeting point. It has already been an hour since my vigil began. The ritual is in place, the choreography is in full swing. Feeling it. Meeting Michèle. Reuniting with Michèle. (…). It feels right, and soon, the time will be up.

As I climbed the stairs, for a moment I felt like Pesquet before entering the capsule (no, just the shelter structure). Then, the mist made the observation ever-changing, yet I relived my 50 years in Capdenac. From my vantage point, I watched birds fly past—and even a drone ! Observing the life of Capdenac-Gare (very quiet on this Pentecost Sunday), taking in the surrounding hills, letting my thoughts drift—this hour offered a rare moment outside of our modern world, where we are constantly bombarded, especially by our smartphones and the media. Dawn is probably the best time, as the low-angled sun gradually reveals the city’s contours, making the buildings ‘emerge’ one by one. In conclusion, taking regular moments to pause, observe, and reflect before making decisions would be a wise habit.
