The Songline is an installation created for the exhibition Depot Erbe at the Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg, curated by Anne Kersting (Theater Freiburg) in collaboration with Christine Litz, the museum’s director. The theme of Depot Erbe is archiving in the performing arts and the “passing on” or transmission of artistic heritage.
The installation The Songline uses the salt from the set of the piece 9000 Pas. The salt acts as a memory and imprint of the live performance—a physical trace of the staged work. A new path, or Songline, is drawn in the salt, and each person who walks the Songline, while moving through the museum, creates a new narrative or personal story in the salt. The title refers to the Songlines of Australian Aboriginal peoples, who use walking, dancing, and singing as a means to document, record, and transmit their cultural heritage.
